Natalie Wood Collection

#1 Post by Lino »

From the Digital Bits Rumour page:
Barrie has learned that Warner Home Video has a couple interesting sets coming this summer. The first is a Home Front Collection due in July, and the second is a Natalie Wood Collection for August. (...) The Natalie Wood Collection would include six films: Inside Daisy Clover (1965), Gypsy (1962), Bombers B-52 (1957), Splendor in the Grass (1961), Sex and the Single Girl (1964), and Cash McCall (1959).

Ditto. I could also use another dose of Ethel in Gypsy.

Finally! I'm thrilled about Inside Daisy Clover, Cash McCall and Sex and the Single Girl. Warner's must not own the rights to Love With a Proper Stranger as surely that would've been included. Also would've preferred the glorified fashion show that is Penelope and All The Fine Young Cannibals to Bombers or a reissue of Gypsy, but this collection will tide me over for the time being.

Incidentally, Natalie would've been 70 this year. Interesting to contemplate how her career would've progressed. I imagine a decade toiling in TV miniseries or night time soaps. The 80s was the time of the deglamorized "serious" working actress and any role worth playing went to either Streep, Lange, or Spacek. Although something tells me Natalie would've been brilliant in the Fonda vehicle The Morning After.

Ditto. There are 2.35:1 clips on You Tube - holy shit, what a strikingly designed and photographed film.

I'm glad I never picked up the original release of Splendor in the Grass, I knew it would be revisited eventually.

Where the hell is this? We're well into "this summer" and no release date from Warners.

Wow, they went all out with the extras. No wonder this took so long.

Seriously, not even an interview with Robert Wagner?

Brainstorm?!

Please, there has to be more to this set than just some cartoons? The only Warners' sets I have are the two Joan Crawford ones and the Tennessee Williams collection, but each was brimming with extras. Oy.

Splendor was supposed to be a two-disc special edition. Is Warner's new motto "Fuck it, man. Whatever."?

Seriously, was The Jazz Singer meant to be their last great release? The film that made them what they were becomes for all intents and purposes a way of putting an end to their 'greatness?'

And I'm very excited to finally be able to check out Inside Daisy Clover, barebones or not. Kael's assessment of it, negative as it was, makes me anticipate it all the more.

Those cannot really be the final specs for the Natalie Wood set. Yes, I am in complete denial. Is Warner becoming too big and powerful for its own sake that it's starting to implode already?

There's this too, which almost makes up for the lack of extras.

What an odd release. DVD Empire lists 6 six films but only 5 discs...and no mention of Brainstorm.

Lovely cover though.

I'd guess from that cover that there's only two items in the Natalie Wood Collection. But they're spectacular items.

Looks like Brainstorm is not going to be part of the set and Bombers B-52 and Cash McCall going to be on one disc.

The lack of extras is surprising given Warner Bros previous track record on these boxed sets. I for one would have thought the repackaged Splendor in the Grass DVD would have at least included some sort of featurette, even if Warren Beatty's participation was unlikely.

Oh, my God! You said it. And this looks like a great set of films all around.

It's Paramount, but I hope Love With the Proper Stranger gets a release, eventually.
