Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains

#1 Post by Jeff »

I know that I'm not the only fan of the film here. The webmaster of fabulousstains.com has revealed in a post at Home Theater Forum that Rhino will be releasing a DVD of the film on September 30. He has already viewed the new anamorphic transfer and says it is top-notch. It is a Paramount property that has been long-delayed due to music rights. I suppose that Rhino has helped in clearing those up. The only confirmed supplements so far are a commentary with Lou Adler and one with Diane Lane and Laura Dern. It may include the documentary (which is viewable online anyway) as well.

About time! I wonder if they'll leave the shower scenes in since it's been rumored that Diane Lane was only 17 when those scenes were shot? Either way, it will be nice to have this cult item back in circulation again. Brings back many fond memories of the old cable show 'Night Flight'.

Since we're talking about it, I'll post the link to the Filmbrain article on the film.

Well, child nudity in itself isn't illegal.

No, but I can't help but wonder if it's a film Lane would rather forget. At least, in the past maybe.

Compared to Jumper and Untraceable, I'd hope that this film would be far from the skeleton in the closet. She should be flattered about the following and fanship it's gotten.

Lane was actually 15 when the film was shot. In the documentary made for IFC, she talks about being "mortified" by her character's transparent costumes. It's all very tame though, and she obviously wasn't scarred by the experience. She is interviewed in the doc, and has recorded a commentary track for the new DVD.

Isn't Diane Lane naked in every movie?

Who can forget her hot, steamy scenes in 'A Little Romance'.

Seriously, I knew she was young when she made the Stains film but I hadn't realized she was only 15.

USA Today has a brief article on the film's return from semi-obscurity. They say that it will be the inaugural release in a new "Rock 'n' Roll Cinema" series from Rhino.

It would be a crime not to include The Making of Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains, as it was the late Sarah Jacobson's love letter to the film; hell, she was practically obsessed with it. Though Sarah (in collaboration with Sam Green) made the piece for IFC's Split Screen program (and it's also available on Sam's Rainbow Man/John 3:16 DVD), this DVD is truly where it belongs. For that matter, Rhino should reprint Sarah's 1998 Grand Royal article as liner notes.

It's the Sarah Jacobson/ Sam Green piece again. Really a pity Rhino couldn't find room on the DVD for it.

Just sitting down to watch this now and it made my BluRay player act crazy. Has anyone else had playback issues with this disc? For whatever reason my player won't go to a main menu and will just launch the feature right away.
