Karoly Makk

#1 Post by HypnoHelioStaticStasis »

So one of the biggest revelations I've experienced since the advent of my collecting dvds was discovering the works of Karoly Makk, whose films "Love" and "Another Way" are beautifully rendered character studies, highly stylized but somehow so evocative of loss that they are, to me, some of the most personal works I've ever seen. There are only two film that have ever made me cry: "Pinocchio" (to be fair, that was when i was six), and "Love" (last month). Makk's humanity towards his characters, EVERY SINGLE ONE, makes me ache inside. Bergman's empathy pales in comparison, as Makk, who always seems totally in control behind the camera, never insists his aesthetic on the characters.

Anyone else here fans? I've seen the films of his available in region 1, and I'm curious to know what I'm missing across the pond.

Have you seen A Long Weekend in Pest and Buda? It's out on Second Run in the UK (Region 0 PAL), and there's a thread about it here.

(There are also threads about Second Run's Love and Another Way)
