Columbia Best Pictures Collection

#1 Post by dx23 »

From thedigitalbits.com
Sony has also set a pair of DVD box sets for release on 11/18. The first is a 6-disc set that includes Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Monty Python's Life of Brian and Monty Python's Meaning of Life (SRP TBA). The other is a 17-disc Columbia Best Pictures Collection (SRP also TBA), that includes It Happened One Night (1934), You Can't Take It with You (1938), All the King's Men (1949), From Here to Eternity (1953), On the Waterfront (1954), The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), A Man for All Seasons (1966), Oliver! (1968), Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) and Gandhi (1982).

I'm almost definitely sold on the Python set and I still don't own the existing release of On the Waterfront. That's surely deserving of a better package than what we currently have... Columbia's track record is pretty sucky when it comes to releasing Special Editions of overdue titles but I wonder what the chances of seeing this one revisited individually is?

As for the others, I already own It Happened One Night as part of the Capra Collection (and I predict many others do as well) and I'm personally sick and tired of reading about Columbia's tenth dozen reissue of Bridge On The River and Lawrence Of Arabia... how many times are they gonna milk these titles and still not get it right?

I agree on that.....i love both films and have the special editions and now will wait for the Blu-Ray versions. Bridge especally since the dvd version is not the best image wise but that could be due to the original negative if the film

What about the endless cycling of the Monty Python titles?

well I don't own any yet so this box will probably be for me.

but judging by the recent BR release of Life of Brian, I'm sure (assuming these are all new restorations) these will look fabulous and be worthy upgrades all around.
