The Silver Chalice (1954),
Not only was this Newman’s first film, it also marked the start of his long-term contract with Warner Bros. He plays a 1st century Greek sculptor who is sold into slavery, but escapes harm when his talent is discovered and he is commissioned to create a replica of the chalice Jesus drank from at The Last Supper. Nominated for two Academy Awards, (Cinematography, Musical Score),The Silver Chalice co-stars Pier Angeli, Virginia Mayo and Jack Palance. Newman was embarrassed by his performance and publicly apologized in an advertisement he placed in the show business journal Variety.

The Helen Morgan Story (1957)
Michael Curtiz (Casablanca) directs this biopic based on the sad life of singer Helen Morgan in the 1920s and ‘30s. The film stars Ann Blyth in the title role, with Newman playing her no-good boyfriend Larry Maddux. The hit tunes of the era are sung off-screen by Gogi Grant.

The Outrage (1964)
Based on Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon, this Western is directed by Martin Ritt (Norma Rae) who directed Newman in five other films. Newman stars as Juan Carrasco, a Mexican bandit who allegedly rapes the wife of a man who allows the crime to happen. As the conflicting versions of the events are told, the truth becomes increasingly elusive. A terrific cast of classic actors includes Laurence Harvey, Claire Bloom and Edward G. Robinson.

Great to see Rachel, Rachel finally on DVD. I'm surprised that the enjoyable Hitchcockian thriller, The Prize (1963), is not on the way, though.

George Feltenstein at Warners has confirmed that Newman's early MGM work including The Prize, Until They Sail and The Rack WILL be released to DVD soon. Probably in 2009 for MGM's 85th birthday. The Prize was on the cards for release this year. It was pushed back though.

I watched The Silver Chalice for the first time last night thanks to the new Warner DVD (released Feb 17 2009). Few movies have as much baggage as this one. Widely derided by critics, audiences and most notably by Paul Newman and his infamous newspaper advertisement, it is hard to enter this movie with an open mind. But I tried my best and found it highly enjoyable. The art direction and soundstage sets operate at an advanced aesthetic level. Visually, this movie is quite an eye-opener. Regarding Paul Newman, I have never been a fan of his, but here he was quite good. He seemed to lack the smarminess and affectation his roles were infected with as he became a bigger star. No extras on the DVD (not even the trailer!) but the transfer was a solid B+

Just noticed on Amazon.co.uk that these titles were released as the Paul Newman Signature Collection Vol 2 in the UK, I wonder why Warners thought these hodgepodge titles would sell better individually in the states?

The UK set is now very cheap - the equivalent of $18.

However, I know from experience that UK Warner releases may not be the same as the USA releases. For example, the UK version of the Rat Pack Collection contains a cropped 4:3 vanilla edition of "4 for Texas"! (It's not sold separately in UK.)

So, does anyone own the UK collection, and/or know whether all the films are at least OAR?
