Four Flies on Grey Velvet (Dario Argento, 1971)

#1 Post by Mr.Jagil »

This is something i've been waiting for.

Four Flies on Grey Velvet has so far not been available on dvd/vhs (only on bootleg version with poor quality), so this is good news for all the Dario Argento fans, who can now finally complete the collection.

I believe this has already been announced in another thread here, but yes, this is quite exciting news.

The company releasing it is MYA Communications. They appear to be the same producers from NoShame and the films on their list are all Italian arthouse and erotica/horror.

Ah snap, i'm sorry. I did search but only topic titles (was afraid of getting a quadrillion hits).

Either way, i am very curious on how good the transfer will be. All i've heard is that the quality on the bootslegs is absolutely horrendous. Also, i thought paramount owned the rights?

Given the DVD producers I would assume the release would be quite good, or at least quite good given source materials.

Paramount distributed the film but I'm guessing the rights have since reverted back to Argento or an independent company.

Though not one of Dario's best films, Four Flies is - like Cat O' Nine Tails - beautifully and audaciously photographed. I have seen it in a scuzzy-as-fuck letterbox (slightly cropped to 2.10:1) DVD-R from the French VHS and so finally seeing a good/great transfer will be sweet. Good times!

I completely forgot this was coming out. GreenCine Daily names it DVD of the Week. Anyone seen it?

I just got it yesterday. Haven't watched it yet. This is his best film overall (or maybe tied with Deep Red), although it doesn't have any set-pieces that I would call stunning.

Big disappointment in that MYA has included both the English and Italian audio ... but failed to subtitle the latter. (This is true of many, but not all, of their other releases.) See post #7 here, but for god's sake steer clear of the fanboy jibber-jabber in the rest of the thread.

A cheap cost-cutting measure that relegates this label to the ranks of amateurs, especially compared to NoShame, which was apparently had some personnel in common with Mya.
