This is why I think it's worth splitting categories between film and treatment- if Benjamin Button had come out this year, I would probably vote it worst in spite of the actually pretty deluxe set of features, because it's one of the crappiest movies with Criterion's name on it in a while. I'd consider Crumb one of the best of this year, in spite of the relative weakness of the extras (especially considering the superior commentary was already available.) It's a totally different set of criteria (aha) from a strict consideration of how well Criterion did their job, and it's probably worth distinguishing.

Vote for as many titles as you want, but only the first five count (unless we're changing the rules-- I don't actually care)

There's also a best Boxed Set category, isn't there?

Also going to use this soapbox to once more ask for a Best Rescue category for a film already out on DVD in R1 that got the Criterion treatment

It doesn't look like it was used last year, but I don't see any reason why we couldn't include it. There were certainly plenty of stunning sets this year. Of course, if people include boxed sets in their top fives, it will be pretty easy to tell which was the favorite.
domino harvey wrote:Also going to use this soapbox to once more ask for a Best Rescue category for a film already out on DVD in R1 that got the Criterion treatment
I like that category. I won't bother adding mine since my number one release of the year would also qualify as the Best Rescue. You're calling the shots this year, Domino. The categories are whatever you say they are.

Sorry. I shouldn't vote on this being a new member. I do read daily for the past 3 years or so though. But feel I should sit this one out, out of respect.

Best Boxed Set (for Domino)
America Lost and Found: The BBS Story (though could be a 4-way battle with the silents, War Trilogy and Costa.)

5.BBS

Best Eclipse

Most disappointing release
L 'Enfance Nue/ Kapo thrown onto EAH

Member of the year
ianungstad

Richard Cranium
zq333zq (Every post was classic although I think he might be a little more Richard than Cranium...)

Best Rescue
Night of the Hunter

Highlight: October and November releases, MGM deal and going Blu with most every title plus a lot of hilarious meltdowns.
Worst of year: Studio Canal OOP fiasco, continuance of EAH line and major boxsets still in SD + Pictureboxed
Future: Miramax deal, Branded to Kill/Tokyo Drifter, more MGM- Leningrad Cowboys, etc

Did we also give up on "non-Criterion top tens/fives" ? I suppose MoC and others deserve better than an afterthought category on a Criterion poll.

Keeping it simple for the tally. only bought a couple CCs this year due to being blu-region locked. CC's loss has definitely been MOC's gain.

Best Release
1. 3 Silent Classics by Joseph von Sternberg--cannot emphasize enough how utterly mind-blowing this set is.
2. Roberto Rossellini’s War Trilogy

Best Cover
3 Silent Classics by Joseph von Sternberg

Best Packaging
3 Silent Classics by Josef von Sternberg

Best (Re)Discovery
3 Silent Classics by Joseph von Sternberg. Knew nothing about his silents prior to getting this set. Heavenly.

Most Disappointing Release
Definitely NOT 3 Silent Classics by Joseph von Sternberg
