This is why I think it's worth splitting categories between film and treatment- if Benjamin Button had come out this year, I would probably vote it worst in spite of the actually pretty deluxe set of features, because it's one of the crappiest movies with Criterion's name on it in a while. I'd consider Crumb one of the best of this year, in spite of the relative weakness of the extras (especially considering the superior commentary was already available.) It's a totally different set of criteria (aha) from a strict consideration of how well Criterion did their job, and it's probably worth distinguishing.knives wrote:Why? It may be lacking in historical extras, but otherwise I'm sure it works for the fans of the film. L'enfance Nue and The Red Desert are much higher contenders.

There's also a best Boxed Set category, isn't there?
Also going to use this soapbox to once more ask for a Best Rescue category for a film already out on DVD in R1 that got the Criterion treatment

Re: 2010 Wrapup | Criterion Forum Awards
It doesn't look like it was used last year, but I don't see any reason why we couldn't include it. There were certainly plenty of stunning sets this year. Of course, if people include boxed sets in their top fives, it will be pretty easy to tell which was the favorite.domino harvey wrote:There's also a best Boxed Set category, isn't there?
I like that category. I won't bother adding mine since my number one release of the year would also qualify as the Best Rescue. You're calling the shots this year, Domino. The categories are whatever you say they are.domino harvey wrote:Also going to use this soapbox to once more ask for a Best Rescue category for a film already out on DVD in R1 that got the Criterion treatment

Highlight: October and November releases, MGM deal and going Blu with most every title plus a lot of hilarious meltdowns.
Worst of year: Studio Canal OOP fiasco, continuance of EAH line and major boxsets still in SD + Pictureboxed
Future: Miramax deal, Branded to Kill/Tokyo Drifter, more MGM- Leningrad Cowboys, etc
Did we also give up on "non-Criterion top tens/fives" ? I suppose MoC and others deserve better than an afterthought category on a Criterion poll.

Keeping it simple for the tally. only bought a couple CCs this year due to being blu-region locked. CC's loss has definitely been MOC's gain.
