An announcement for a Wexner Center symposium states that a release of The Fantastic Mr. Fox, while unannounced officially, is currently in the works.

Last night I watched 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days. I liked it a lot. I just wonder if this is a CC film. I couldn't think of another film in the CC library that deals with abortion. Is there one?

I'm not sure what you're implying, but I don't think subject matter has anything to do with a film's inclusion in the collection.

Yes, CC, as far as I know, don't decide by subject matter on what films to release. I do find it odd that a film from IFC that won top prize at Canne was turned down by CC. So, maybe this topic Kim, Becker and gang want to stay away from. Or maybe it's just this film, because of one scene in particular which is very disturbing in a very realistic way. Eh who knows.

I think the film is great. I would definitely buy it if CC releases it.

Criterion didn't turn down 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days; it simply hasn't been available to them yet. At the time it was released, Criterion had no relationship with IFC. IFC was working with Genius Products and had an exclusivity period with Blockbuster Video (crazy how that situation from only a few years ago seems so antiquated now). Many of their films from that period like 4 Months, Paranoid Park, Flight of the Red Balloon, The Wind That Shakes the Barley, and (God help us) Hannah Takes the Stairs are potential Criterion fodder, but only after the previous distrubution arrangements have expired. I'm guessing that was a five-year deal, which would mean Criterion should be able to do their own releases beginning next year.

Jeff, Awesome. Thanks for the info. I had rented the DVD of 4 Months from Netflix and I thought it kind of strange that it was labeled as a Netflix home release. Hopefully we will see it in the Collection at some point.

It's currently my #1 most hoped-for title. I put off watching it for so long because, as much as I consider myself an open-minded lover of cinema, the kid in me that grew up watching Tommy Boy 4 times a week heard "Romanian illegal abortion drama" and didn't jump at the chance to watch it. But it's electric, and terrifying and one of my all-time favorites now. If they do a double-release with "Beyond the Hills" and never release another film, I'd be content.

Where is Jules and Jim? I want that in February, please Criterion. It should not be left out in the cold. Look at the list below, which is the first 30 of the top 100 movies in John Kobal's book of 1988 where he polled a list of 80 odd critics. Not definitive of course, but it's interesting that Jules and Jim comes in at no. 21, and every movie ranked higher than it (except for perhaps one - Ivan the Terrible) has an English-friendly bluray version. Mind you, I'm not arguing for it just on the basis of a 25 year old critics poll of limited statistical power - I love the movie too...

I beg to differ....after all variety is the spice of life. If Criterion released nothing but WWII & holocaust films, I doubt that after 600+ releases there would be many people here clamoring to guess what's on schedule for next month. That being said, some other nice abortion additions (to Rosemary's Baby of course) would be Vera Drake and Maelstrom.

Re intrepid abortionists: Chabrol's Story of Women is on Criterion's Hulu channel.

It was an HVe title, though the least of the three possible Chabrols from that label (La ceremonie and Masques are far better, the former by a degree of a hundred)

Ivan the Terrible is one of my most wanted for sure (it'd be amazing to have an Eisenstein 3-pack of the Ivans and Nevsky) and would be a day 1 buy.
