BUT, they need to splice in the scene where Pat Garrett visits his wife. Again, I'm baffled why it was left out, especially when it's explained in the commentary why it should've been re-instated.

The 1988 Turner preview version is really Peckinpah's personal cut and print of the film. Somewhere down the line, Peckinpah cut out the scene where Pat Garrett visits his wife, not to delete it from his print, but because he wanted it shown (either for a particular exhibition or for television, I forgot which). This scene never made it back into his print, he died before that could happen, and it's unfortunate because that print was then taken as the source for the film's re-release in 1988, and no one involved thought (or perhaps knew) to retrieve that scene and put it back in. It was included in the much-maligned 2005 cut, so it's not like it's lost. It would be very, very easy to cut it back into Peckinpah's print where it originated and where it belongs, but no one's done it yet.

I think PTA said in an interview awhile back he was reconsidering audio commentaries, so maybe he'd do one for Magnolia and it would give Criterion a good chance to jump on it, as it's not a title I'd imagine they'd want to re-release.

yep. I'm sure he'd skip over the ending (totally reasonable) but I would love to hear him talk about the film at length. cast interviews are always welcome too as those are both absent from the current BDs (though Boogie Nights has the cast commentary)

but otherwise yeah there's no point for either movie, Hard Eight and Punch Drunk Love are both far more in need.

It would've been nice if someone had asked about Andrei Rublev instead of wasting time talking about things like whether Tootsie belongs in the Collection or not.

Last year I believe they mentioned Rublev is still a huge mess. Sounded like a proper restoration wasn't even planned, and it's going to need a lot of work.

Excited about Warners, obviously. Hopefully things like Shop Around the Corner could be coming.

Maybe that wasn't the best example, but I could think of quite a few things I would have rather seen them get asked. Another could have been the reasons why some of the box sets have dropped out of print and if they'll be available again in the foreseeable future.

What we really need to come out of this Warner Bros deal is those few silents that seem too big and influential for Warners to relegate to the Archive, but seem to have no interest in giving a proper release on their own. I am specifically thinking about King Vidor's The Crowd and Sjostrom's films with Lillian Gish, The Wind and The Scarlet Letter. I would think these would be near the top of Criterion's list.

Agreed of course! I really wonder how the Big Parade fared sales-wise. They mentioned that the status of the above (and Greed) would depend on how Big Parade sold.

There's also the frame-rate issue on BP, so it would be great if that could get fixed with anything that ends up coming out.

Completely forgot that Greed is Warners too and therefore would also fall into that category...

I doubt Big Parade sold very well (though I did my best to help the efforts through my purchase), that is why Criterion releases might be the best of both worlds for Warners. They would save face by not dumping them into the archive and allowing them to come out in great editions, while all the long only having to put minimal effort into it.

Even if they are reluctant to fish it out to a third-party...the blu-ray arm of the Warner Archive seems to be putting out a really excellent product. If that's what it takes to get these films on blu, so be it.

Wouldn't it be really difficult to get the Waters' films on Blu-Ray because of music rights clearance?

It's my understanding that the only film that the music rights are a real issue with is Mondo Trasho. That said, I've been led to believe that it'll be near-impossible to get the proper music rights for that one again.

I seriously doubt that Warner executives have the same definition of "saving face" that you do. Especially when it comes to films that only a tiny fraction of the population are interested in.
