On the latest The Extras podcast (The Curse of Frankenstein edition) Feltenstein mentions WAC currently has 79 feature films in the works at different stages of production

In a recent blog post concerning their Curse of Frankenstein release, Hammer Films state that their UHDs will NOT be region locked. Based on this and the fact Warner Brothers owns the distribution rights in all other regions, I suspect their UHDs will also be region-free.

One of the special features highlights her in particular so I'm going to go with yes. I am under the impression that Whoopi Goldberg does/has done introductions explaining these things in a historical context on home releases before and I imagine that's what will be one these discs.

I remember as a child watching some of these shorts on Cartoon Network in the nineties but I don't remember it being as egregious as she's depicted when I did a Google search for the purposes of making this post. The NAACP was able to lobby successfully for her removal in 1953! Did they tone down her depictions or something for later releases?

They just dropped the character—voiced by a Black actress, Lillian Randolph—entirely for the later shorts. And then, when the cartoons were packaged for TV, she was recolored as white and redubbed—by a white woman—to be an Irish stereotype instead.

Oh, I know I shouldn't count my chicks before they're hatched, but fans have been roaring for this for over a decade, and this close to release (and with social media buzzing), it'd be a very bad look if WB decided to cancel it. I choose to remain cautiously optimistic.

Dipping their toes in the Delmer Daves melodrama waters at last! Bring on Parrish, Susan Slade, and Rome Adventure next.

Lovely to Look At is a surprise. It's a bit stupid, but it has a great fashion show sequence directed by Vincente Minnelli and a beautiful dance number (to "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes") with Marge and Gower Champion. It should look really nice in WAC's typically excellent 3-strip Technicolor restoration. The elements for Royal Wedding must be in really rotten shape if they're releasing this before that.

The way they are releasing even the dodgiest Minnelli titles (The Cobweb), it's a safe guess the rest of his filmography is in the work. Only 5 owned by Warner left - Undercurrent, The Story of Three Loves, Tea and Sympathy, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, The Sandpiper.

Yolanda and the Thief seems like a really obvious choice for them: Arthur Freed, Fred Astaire, Vincente Minnelli, Technicolor. And I remember Mildred Natwick being flat-out hilarious in this. But applying logic to WAC's release slate is a fool's errand.

I managed to finish watching The Sandpiper yesterday — it took three sittings to get through it, but I felt compelled to finish since it’s leaving the Criterion Channel at the end of the month.

It’s tortuously slow, and the attempted drama just doesn’t work. It desperately wants to be “hip” and profound, but it never gets close to those goals. On the upside, the setting is photographed well.

I was shocked to learn that I hadn’t actually seen this, at least according to my Letterboxd. Pretty surprising, since I’m like one of eight people alive who enjoys Kathryn Grayson and her and Keel together mean I def would have picked this up in the early days of the Archive DVD-Rs before I quit supporting a temporary physical format. Guess it just fell through the cracks for me

Really pleased to see Rafferty and the Gold Dust Twins is getting a release. It's early Jerry Bruckheimer from his post=advertising days and before he found his niche with "swinging dick" films. It's a very cute (if uneven) film in one of of my favorite subgenres: the 70s road film. Alan Arkin is brilliant, as always, as a depressed, alcoholic DMV employee who gets a new pep for life after being held captive by a teenage Mackenzie Phillips and Sally Kellerman. Alex Rocco, a real personal favorite of mine, has a great small role as a Las Vegas schmuck looking to live without paying a single check. For whatever reason, it never officially made it to DVD and assumed it was in some sort of rights hell like the original sound mix for California Split or Bill Gunn's Stop, so I'm please to see it's coming. I'll finally get to see it in 'scope rather than pan-and-scan.

My write up:

the Mad Miss Manton (Leigh Jason 1938) Infuriatingly dumb murder mystery with Barbara Stanwyck's daffy society dame running afoul of a killer while newspaperman Henry Fonda alternately damns and courts her. To state the obvious, these two stars fare much better a few years later in the Lady Eve. Unfunny and routinely idiotic, with the only saving grace being a brief plot-point centered on the construction of the NYC subway lines.
