She confirms Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore to be coming (!!), so she could have been there for that. In addition to featuring her mom Diane Ladd, young Laura is onscreen for about 30 seconds in one of the diner scenes. Probably also explains why Jodie Foster was there a couple of weeks ago.

So they bring in Cameron Crowe, who also grabs the film atop the forum's 2000 Mini-List.

I don't like Moonage Daydream - I haven't liked anything I've seen from Brett Morgen - but I was wondering if he would pick it up and tell his infamous Bowie story. (Alas, he does not on both counts.)

Maggie Gyllenhaal arrives unprepared (and doesn't seem to leave with The Koker Trilogy, despite a request).

Yeah, found that disappointing. They could have handed it to her!

These closet videos are fun and everything, but I can’t help thinking: don’t these people already own these films? And if not, surely they can all afford to buy them. Criterion should take their picks and gift them to a random fan. A lottery, maybe. At the very least they could let the celebrity go with their haul and also do something special with their picks. Maybe make them available for 50% off for 24 hours.

One of my favorite interview answers from John Lennon was right after Beatlemania hit - now that they were famous and their mere presence was generating gobs of revenue, he mentioned how everyone was giving them luxurious gifts for free whereas back when they were actually poor, no one would give them anything, much less give them any respect. He didn't just say that out of amusement, he was genuinely resentful, but you see this play out all the time. Even last year there was press coverage on the backlash against the U.S. Open for charging exorbitant ticket prices while reserving the best seats for rich celebrities free of charge.

Regardless, celebrities get perks because they're used for promotional purposes, and when companies give them these things for free, celebrities see them as generous gifts and are more than happy to accept, which in turn means it's easier to exploit them for promotional purposes.

He has to be there for more than just the closet. I hope it’s for Paterson. It could also be Coffee and Cigarettes which was confirmed years ago

Sergei Loznitsa loves films that fight, and quickly finds meaning in the design of the Buñuel box.

Slattery's a local and often out and about in the city. I ran into him once in lower Manhattan and ended up having a very cordial conversation, mostly about an indie film he made and was completing. (I can't remember if it had a title locked in, but it's likely out there already and I haven't gotten around to seeing it.) Very nice, down-to-earth guy, and another good example of someone whose life is really invested in doing the kind of work that inspired him in the first place.

Jack Harlow's closet picks are so good that I will resist making fun of him calling Mastroianni "broski" or for saying that he wishes he were at the party in La Notte.

I've been noticing lately though that many younger visitors (not just him) are not able to articulate anything substantive about their picks. This would impress me more than whether their picks actually align with my taste.

Harlow was, apparently, so inarticulate about his Hitchcock choice that Criterion overlooked it in the selections list at the end.

I had no idea who this guy is, but his homely brosephisms are at least comedic in their absurdity. Yeah, La Notte is a "Heater". Then I found out he's a bit famous for his cultural appropriations.
