These closet videos are fun and everything, but I can’t help thinking: don’t these people already own these films? And if not, surely they can all afford to buy them. Criterion should take their picks and gift them to a random fan. A lottery, maybe. At the very least they could let the celebrity go with their haul and also do something special with their picks. Maybe make them available for 50% off for 24 hours.

One of my favorite interview answers from John Lennon was right after Beatlemania hit - now that they were famous and their mere presence was generating gobs of revenue, he mentioned how everyone was giving them luxurious gifts for free whereas back when they were actually poor, no one would give them anything, much less give them any respect. He didn't just say that out of amusement, he was genuinely resentful, but you see this play out all the time. Even last year there was press coverage on the backlash against the U.S. Open for charging exorbitant ticket prices while reserving the best seats for rich celebrities free of charge.

Regardless, celebrities get perks because they're used for promotional purposes, and when companies give them these things for free, celebrities see them as generous gifts and are more than happy to accept, which in turn means it's easier to exploit them for promotional purposes.

Slattery's a local and often out and about in the city. I ran into him once in lower Manhattan and ended up having a very cordial conversation, mostly about an indie film he made and was completing. (I can't remember if it had a title locked in, but it's likely out there already and I haven't gotten around to seeing it.) Very nice, down-to-earth guy, and another good example of someone whose life is really invested in doing the kind of work that inspired him in the first place.

I had no idea who this guy is, but his homely brosephisms are at least comedic in their absurdity. Yeah, La Notte is a "Heater". Then I found out he's a bit famous for his cultural appropriations.
