Directed by: Billy Wilder
Billy Wilder’s Ace in the Hole is one of the most scathing indictments of American culture ever produced by a Hollywood filmmaker. Kirk Douglas gives the fiercest performance of his career as Chuck Tatum, an amoral newspaper reporter who washes up in dead-end Albuquerque, happens upon the scoop of a lifetime, and will do anything to keep getting the lurid headlines. Wilder’s follow-up to Sunset Boulevard is an even darker vision, a no-holds-barred exposé of the American media’s appetite for sensation that has gotten only more relevant with time.

Release Notes on Restoration
Ace in the Hole
Ace in the Hole is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.37:1. On widescreen televisions, black bars will appear on the left and the right of the image to maintain the proper screen format. This new digital transfer was created in 4K resolution on a Scanity film scanner at Technicolor Hollywood from a 35mm duplicate negative, with specific portions taken from a 35mm acetate fine-grain assembled from several sources; the film was restored in 2K. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, scratches, splices, and warps were manually removed using MTI's DRS and Pixel Farm's PFClean, while Digital Vision's Phoenix was used for small dirt, grain, and noise reduction.
The original monaural soundtrack was remastered at 24-bit from a 35mm optical soundtrack print. Clicks, thumps, hiss, and hum were manually removed using Pro Tools HD. Crackle was attenuated using AudioCube’s integrated workstation.
