In 1977, German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder was thirty-two years old and had already directed more than twenty-five feature films. That summer, he embarked on a project to trace the postwar history of West Germany in a series of films told from the perspectives of three remarkable women. Fassbinder’s The Marriage of Maria Braun, Veronika Voss, and LolaThe BRD Trilogy—would garner him his greatest commercial success, both at home and abroad, and cement his position as one of the foremost figures of the New German Cinema.

The Marriage of Maria Braun
The Marriage of Maria Braun is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.66.1. On standard 4:3 the image will appear letterboxed, On standard and widescreen televisions, black bars may also be visible on the left and right to maintain the proper screen format. This 4K digital restoration was undertaken by the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Foundation from the 35 mm original camera negative at ARRI Media in Grünwald, Germany. The original monaural soundtrack was remastered from the 35 mm magnetic track.
Veronika Voss
Veronika Voss is presented in the aspect ratio of 1.78:1. On standard 4:3 televisions, the image will appear letterboxed. On widescreen televisions, the image should fill the screen. This high-definition digital transfer was created on a C-Reality Wetgate film scanner from the 35 mm original camera negative. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, and scratches were removed using the MTI Digital Restoration System. The original monaural soundtrack was remastered from the 35 mm magnetic track. Clicks, thumps, hiss, hum, and crackle were manually removed using Pro Tools HD and iZotope RX.
Lola
Lola is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.66:1. On standard 4:3 televisions, the image will appear letterboxed. On widescreen televisions, the image should fill the screen. This 4K digital restoration was undertaken by StudioCanal from the 35 mm original camera negative at Alpha-Omega Digital GmbH in Munich. The original monaural soundtrack was remastered from the 35 mm magnetic track.
