Tired of churning out lightweight comedies, Hollywood director John L. Sullivan (Joel McCrea) decides to make O Brother, Where Art Thou?—a serious, socially responsible film about human suffering. After his producers point out that he knows nothing of hardship, Sullivan hits the road disguised as a hobo. En route to enlightenment, he encounters a lovely but no-nonsense young woman (Veronica Lake)—and more trouble than he ever dreamed of. This comic masterpiece by Preston Sturges is among the finest Hollywood satires and a high-water mark in the career of one of the industry’s most revered funnymen.

Release Notes on Restoration

Sullivan's Travels
Sullivan's Travels is presented in its original aspect ratio and framed at 1.37:1. On widescreen televisions black bars will appear on the left and right of the image to maintain the proper screen format. This new high-definition digital transfer was created on a Spirit DataCine film scanner from a 35mm nitrate fine-grain at Universal Studios in Universal City, California, where the film was also restored.

The original monaural soundtrack was remastered at 24-bit from a 35mm magnetic track made from the original 35mm soundtrack negative. Clicks, thumps, hiss, hum, and crackle were manually removed using Pro Tools HD, AudioCube's integrated workstation, and iZotope RX 4.
