Wings of Desire is one of cinema’s loveliest city symphonies. Bruno Ganz is Damiel, an angel perched atop buildings high over Berlin who can hear the thoughts—fears, hopes, dreams—of all the people living below. But when he falls in love with a beautiful trapeze artist, he is willing to give up his immortality and come back to earth to be with her. Made not long before the fall of the Berlin Wall, this stunning tapestry of sounds and images, shot in black and white and color by the legendary Henri Alekan, forever made the name of director Wim Wenders synonymous with film art.

Release Notes on Restoration

Wings of Desire
Wings of Desire is presented in the filmmaker's preferred aspect ratio of 1.66:1.

The restoration on the 4K UHD disc was created and graded under the supervision of director Wim Wenders. The source material was Wim Wenders Stiftung's theatrical 4K restoration, undertaken in 2017 from the color and black-and-white 35 mm original camera negatives, using an ARRISCAN film scanner, at ARRI Media. The newly mixed 5.1 surround soundtrack was remastered from the 35mm original magnetic tracks and supervised by Wenders at BASIS BERLIN Postproduktion. Digital restoration was carried out with the support of CNC.

The restoration on the Blu-ray disc - also supervised by Wenders - was undertaken by the Criterion Collection in 2009 from a 35 mm interpositive and a 35 mm internegative scanned on a Spirit Datacine. The 2.0 surround soundtrack was remastered from the 35mm original magnetic track.
